Horseradish is part of the mustard family and has a uniquely strong flavor that can be used to add bite to any dish from fish and seafood to chicken, beef and vegetables. It's easy to make and can be customized to your taste by adjusting the amount of horseradish added.
Try this sauce on burgers, as a complement to roasted potatoes or mixed into mashed potatoes. It's also delicious with Caribbean curried chicken, roasted brussels sprouts or as a salad dressing. So many options!
2 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp sour cream
2 tbsp prepared horseradish (buy the refrigerated version to avoid preservatives and sodium added to maintain shelf life)
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp sugar
Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl
Taste and adjust intensity by adding more horseradish, if needed
Horseradish is low in calories and fat and contains fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin C, among other nutrients. Horseradish has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to a chemical compound common to the mustard family of plants, called sinigrin.
